Reading an eBook with the Axis 360 Desktop Reader



Once you have checked out an eBook on your library's Axis 360 website, you can read it within the Axis 360 Desktop Reader. Click the links below to find out how to download your eBook to the Desktop Reader, as well as how to navigate within the eBook.

Downloading an eBook on the Desktop Reader

1. When you open the app, your eBook should display. If it does not, click on the Refresh button refresh button.

2. Click on the cover to download the eBook.

3. Once the eBook has finished downloading, the cover will display in full color and you can tap on the cover to open the eBook.

4. Your eBook will display. You can immediately begin reading, or investigate the navigation options detailed below.

Navigation Options



Advancing Forward and Backward

There are several ways to go forward and backward within your eBook:
 
-   On your keyboard, press Page Up to go backward and Page Down to go forward.

-   Use the bottom slider to quickly go forward and backward throughout your eBook. Drag the diamond icon left to go backward and right to go forward.

-   Press the left and right arrow icons on the screen. Press the left arrow to go backward. Press the right arrow to go forward

Searching

1.  To search within your eBook, click on the Browse & Annotate link on the left side of your screen.

2.  A menu will display. Click within Search book and enter your search term.

3.  Press Enter. Your search results will display. Click on one of the results to go directly to that page within the eBook.

Zooming

1.  To zoom within your book, click the Magnifying Glass icon located in the top right of the page.

2.  Move the zoom slider to the right to zoom in. Move the zoom slider to the left to zoom out. Alternatively, you can also press the two magnifying glass icons to zoom in or out.

3.  To  move around the page while you're in zoom mode, click the hand icon.

4.  To exit out of the zoom feature, click X

Guided Zoom


1.  Guided Zoom will guide you through the entire book in a zoomed in format. Press the Guided Zoom icon at the top of the screen to begin.

2.  The screen will immediately zoom in. To navigate to the next portion of the page, click the right Guided Zoom icon (2). To go backward to the previous zoomed section, click the left Guided Zoom icon (1). To exit Guided Zoom, click on the Guided Zoom icon
(3) at the top of the page. The book will return to its regular format.

Notes

1.  To add and view notes within your eBook, first click on Browse & Annotate to open the main menu. Make sure you are viewing the page you wish to associate with your note.

2.  Click the Note icon (1) at the top of the screen. Tap the plus icon (2) to open a text box. Enter your note in the text box (3) provided.

3. Your previously saved notes will display in this space as well. Just click on one of them to go to the page associated with that note.


4. Click Print Notes at the bottom of the screen to print your notes. If you'd like to save your notes to your hard drive, click Export Notes.

Adding and Viewing Favorites


1.  Add a page to your Favorites by clicking the star icon in the lower corner of the page you wish to save as a Favorite. The star will turn blue.

2.  To view your Favorites, click on Browse & Annotate.

3.  Click on the star icon (1), and then click on the favorite (2) you wish to navigate to within your eBook.

Highlighting

1.  To highlight a portion of the text, position your mouse cursor over the place you wish to begin and drag your mouse until the end of your phrase or word. When you release the mouse, a pop-up menu will appear. Click on the highlighter icon (1) and then select a color (2) for your highlight. To remove your highlight, select the red X (3).

2. To view your highlights, click on Browse & Annotate to bring up the side menu.

3. Select the highlighter icon (1) and then click on a highlight (2) to navigate directly to that portion of the text within your eBook.

Reference Searching

1.  You can search for a word or phrase using Wikipedia, Google, Bing, thefreedictionary.com, and Thesaurus.com by highlighting a word with your cursor and selecting one of the options from the associated pop-up menu. Tap on the magnifying glass to bring up the menu.

2. Select your reference option
(1) from the menu and then click Go (2) to execute the search.

Text Settings

There are two types of text settings available for eBooks. These settings are set by the publisher and cannot be changed. To access these settings, select the text icon located in the upper right of your window.

Fixed Text Settings - The font size and page numbers within Fixed Text Settings books cannot be changed. With Fixed Text Settings books, you can choose to display two pages
at  once (Double Page), or just one page at a time (Single Page). If you want to view the book with the publisher's default settings, select Automatic. If you'd like your pages to electronically "curl" when you go forward or backward, select Curl

Flow Text Settings - You can change the font size (and therefore the page numbers) for Flow Text Settings books, as well as several other options. To change the color of the book pages for easier reading, select a Color Theme. Change the Font Size by selecting a larger or smaller font. Finally, i

Text-to-Speech

Text-to-Speech is enabled for some eBooks. To see if it is enabled for the eBook you have open, click on the headphones icon in the upper right corner of the page. If it is allowed, a voice will read the eBook to you, highlighting each word as it is spoken.

Closing Your eBook

To close your eBook, just click the Close Book link in the upper right corner of the page. Your place will be saved for the next time you open your eBook.
